  • Applies pressure to the poll, chin groove, and tongue for effective leverage
  • Helps horses rate quicker
  • Promotes quicker responsiveness during performance events
  • Ideal for barrel racing and other speed disciplines
  • Supports precision, control, and confidence in challenging maneuvers

WHY A SET BACK CURB?

A setback curb changes how the curb strap or chain engages on a leverage bit by positioning the curb attachment point farther back from the mouthpiece/shank.

In practical terms, it usually makes the curb action come on a little differently—often more progressively and with a bit more warning before full leverage engages. As the rider picks up the reins, the bit rotates, the curb tightens under the jaw, and the setback position can help the bit settle and signal before the curb becomes fully active.

For many horses, that can make the bit feel smoother and less abrupt, especially in turns or transitions where you want the horse to respond without feeling instantly “grabbed” by the curb. The exact feel still depends a lot on the shank length, mouthpiece, purchase, curb adjustment, and rein hand.

Recommended for Intermediate to advanced horse and ride

CRICKET ROLLER: Great for a nervous type horse with the cricket provides a pacifier and also allows the rider to hear when they are rolling it thanks to the cricket like chirp it creates when rolled.

GERMAN SILVER BEADS:  provide a pacifier for nervous horses and increases salivation which naturally relaxes the jaw promoting more effective response to the bit.  The beads also roll on the bars of the mouth preventing over reaction to bar pressure.

SQUARE MOUTH: The square mouth provides a little more "Bite" than a smooth mouth.

CHAIN BITS: For a more sensitive horse or a horse that is resistant to bar pressure

PORTED MOUTH:  provides faster response and natural break at the poll.  Great for a pushy or strong horse.
